The former UNAIDS Executive Director, Dr. (Baron) Peter Piot, A Belgian microbiologist known for his research into Ebola and AIDS is currently in Sierra Leone assessing the trend of the Ebola epidemic in the country. He was accompanied by representatives from the London School of Hygiene and The Welcome Thrust from the United Kingdom. In a meeting with stake holders in the fight against HIV/AIDS held in morning hours of Saturday 20th December, 2014, he expressed his solidarity and the hard times Sierra Leoneans have gone through since the epidemic broke out almost seven months ago. He said, his visit to Sierra Leone was to hear from larger section of the populace and to build synergy with the existing structures set up by the government. He however expressed hope from all the treatment centers he visited that Sierra Leone would overcome the deadly hemorrhagic disease as we all look forward to developing a vaccine in the coming months.

The National AIDS Secretariat (NAS) East Regional Office is headed by a Regional Coordinator followed in order of rank and authority by the following categories of officials: the Regional Monitoring & Evaluation Officer, the Regional Finance officer, the Documentation Officer/Liberian, the Team Assistant, the Data Entry Clerk, Drivers and Office Assistant/Messenger/Cleaner. NAS works in partnership with other organisations otherwise known as Implementing Partners (IP). In the eastern region, NAS is in partnership with the following organisations: National AIDs Control Programme (NACP) of the Ministry of Health and Sanitation (MOHS), the Network of HIV Positives (NETHIP), AIDS Healthcare Foundation (AHF) and others not mentioned.

His Excellency Dr. Ernest Bai Koroma has said at the 7th National AIDS Commission (NAC) meeting held at state house on 23rd July 2013 that Sierra Leone has made significant progress towards universal access to HIV/AIDS services as well as meeting the MDG target on HIV/AIDS by 2015.He however noted that mobilization of domestic resources was very much crucial to sustain the fight against HIV/AIDS in the country.
“Our coverage rate on treatment for adult and children infected with HIV rose from 33% in 2010 to about 52% in 2012. Treatment among pregnant HIV positive women increased from 47% in 2011 to 96% in 2012. We have also witnessed recorded increased survival rate among people infected with the disease from 83% in 2010 to 92.6% in 2012”. President Koroma disclosed.

First Lady Madam Sia Koroma Delivering Keynote address
|
A campaign aimed at protecting the lives of mothers and babies, ‘Bon pikin we nor get HIV’ was launched on 10th December 2012 by the First Lady of the republic of Sierra Leone Sia Nyama Koroma at the Lumley Government hospital in Freetown. The launching which has as its theme “My Right, Your Right, Our Rights: To give birth to a life without HIV” is being supported by UNAIDS, National HIV/AIDS Secretariat (NAS), and implemented by Voice of Women (VOW) in collaboration with Office of the First Lady (OFL).
